From Police Program to Pregnancy: The Full Story of Sandra Birchmore’s Homicide

On February 4, 2021, 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore was discovered dead in her apartment in Canton, Massachusetts. Within hours, authorities concluded her death was self-inflicted. Sandra was 8 to 10 weeks pregnant at the time of her death. Her story began years earlier when she joined the Stoughton Police Explorers Program at age 13, driven by a childhood passion for law enforcement and dreams of becoming a police officer. Rather than launching a promising career, the program placed her in proximity to three Stoughton police officers: Matthew Farwell, William Farwell, and Robert Devine. What subsequent investigations would reveal was a decade-long pattern of grooming, manipulation, and abuse perpetrated by these officers against Sandra. Initial official statements claimed no criminal activity had occurred, but newly appointed Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara was not satisfied with this conclusion. She noticed red flags that warranted deeper examination. McNamara conducted a thorough internal investigation that ultimately uncovered thousands of messages between Sandra and the officers, documented disturbing behaviors, and revealed misconduct that state-level investigators had either overlooked or intentionally dismissed. This evidence suggested that Sandra's death was not accidental and that Matthew Farwell, the officer Sandra had trusted most, may have planned her death to prevent her from becoming a witness against him. On the same day the affidavit was released, Matthew Farwell was arrested and charged with a rare federal crime: killing a witness or victim.
